Selection of Process Connection for Float Level Indicator

Float Level Indicator is based on Archimedes Buoyancy Principle and uses the buoyancy of a float to indicate the liquid level in the tank. The float rises and falls as the fluid level in a vessel changes. Due to magnetic effect, as the float moves, the proximal reed switches in the chamber are magnetized by permanent magnet in the float and change the status from “open” to “closed”. The resistance value in the sensor changes linearly. The change of resistance value is then converted into 4 ~ 20mA standard DC output signal for remote detection and control.

Working conditions of liquid level measurement are complex, in terms of process connection selection, it is necessary to consider whether the float can be placed into the threaded hole if threaded connection is chosen. In general, for the accurate and reliable measurement, different sizes of floats are available according to different liquid densities. When a large float is selected, it is unable to be installed for threaded connection.

To avoid this situation, Jiwei recommends clients to choose flange connection with larger through-hole, which has following benefits:

1. Flange with a larger through-hole can appropriately increase the lateral diameter of the float and reduce the longitudinal height, thereby improving measurement accuracy.

2. Flange with a larger through-hole can appropriately increase the diameter of the guide tube to strengthen the stiffness, especially significant for long-range (or long intrusion depth) applications.

3. Equipment from different manufacturers have different matching rules for float size and medium density. Flange with a larger through-hole improves the compatibility and flexibility of replacement with equipment from different manufacturers in the future.
