Radar Measurement Technology for Water Supply and Treatment – Frequently Asked Questions

In modern water supply and wastewater treatment plants, radar level transmitters play a vital role in ensuring stable monitoring and safe operation. Jiwei Automations has developed the JWrada® series radar level meters, based on advanced 80GHz FMCW technology, specifically tailored for demanding water industry applications. These instruments provide accurate, reliable, and maintenance-friendly level measurement even in challenging conditions such as turbulence, foam, or vapor.

Below you will find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions raised during our field projects and technical seminars.

Radar Measurement Technology for Water Supply and Treatment – Frequently Asked Questions
A single JWrada® radar meter ensures safe, continuous level monitoring and overfill protection

1. Overfill Protection

Can a single JWrada® radar device provide both level measurement and overfill protection?
Yes. A single JWrada® radar level meter can handle both continuous level monitoring and overfill detection. This dual functionality allows operators to reduce instrumentation complexity while ensuring process safety.

When would I need redundant protection?
Redundant systems are typically required in high-risk installations such as large reservoirs or chemical dosing tanks. While JWrada® sensors already provide high reliability with their advanced echo recognition, operators in mission-critical plants often prefer to add secondary safety layers for regulatory compliance.

How can I verify Jiwei sensors’ reliability?
JWrada® sensors are manufactured under strict quality management systems and tested to meet international safety and reliability standards. Customers can rely on Jiwei Automations’ transparent quality assurance process to ensure compliance with industry regulations.

2. Challenging Application Conditions

How do JWrada® sensors perform in turbulent water or wave motion?
The high dynamic range and fast signal processing of JWrada® ensure stable readings, even when water levels fluctuate due to pumping or wave action. The instrument filters multiple echoes and locks onto the real surface, preventing signal jumps.

Can JWrada® measure through sludge or scum layers?
Radar cannot penetrate dense sludge. However, JWrada® reliably detects the upper sludge interface. In treatment plants where sludge blanket depth is critical, operators often combine JWrada® radar with Jiwei pressure transmitters to calculate both interface and total depth.

Are JWrada® sensors limited to liquids only?
No. JWrada® devices are also suitable for bulk solids such as lime powder, sand, and grain storage. Thanks to their narrow beam angle and precise focusing, they can be used in small silos and tanks with internal structures without signal interference.

3. Connectivity and Integration

Do JWrada® devices only support 4–20 mA?
No. In addition to standard 4–20 mA with HART communication, JWrada® transmitters support Modbus protocols. With Jiwei Smart Control (计为智控) mobile app, operators can also wirelessly configure and monitor sensors via Bluetooth.

Can the Modbus version be used in hazardous areas?
Yes. The encapsulated Modbus version can be installed in Zone 1, while the host control system or data logger remains in Zone 2 or outside hazardous zones. This reduces wiring complexity and lowers installation costs.

Is Profinet supported?
Currently, JWrada® supports HART and Modbus. Profinet integration is already under development for upcoming product lines.

4. Controllers and Data Use

Do I need a separate controller to run JWrada® radar sensors?
Not necessarily. JWrada® transmitters can be directly integrated into PLCs and SCADA systems for continuous process control. For plants that require additional display and control functions, Jiwei provides optional controllers designed for pump management and process visualization.

What other functions can be achieved with controllers?
Controllers can handle advanced functions such as pump alternation, alarm management, and flow calculation for open channels with standard weirs or flumes. These features make them practical add-ons for water utilities aiming at digital transformation.

5. Explosion Protection

Which Ex zones are supported?
JWrada® radar meters are available in intrinsically safe and encapsulated versions suitable for Zone 0 and Zone 1, widely used in wastewater treatment plants with biogas and chemical handling.

Are flameproof metal housings available?
Yes. JWrada® is available with robust IP68-rated metal and engineering plastic housings. These designs ensure durability while keeping installation lightweight, and global Ex certifications guarantee safe use in hazardous areas without heavy flameproof enclosures.

6. Radar vs. Ultrasonic

Is radar really superior to ultrasonic sensors?
For water and wastewater processes, radar offers clear advantages. Unlike ultrasonic sensors, JWrada® radar technology is unaffected by temperature variations, condensation, steam, or foam. With cost differences decreasing, many plants now select radar as their standard solution for new installations.

Will Jiwei continue to supply ultrasonic devices?
Radar is expected to gradually replace ultrasonic in most new projects. However, Jiwei still offers ultrasonic solutions for customers maintaining legacy systems.

Conclusion

JWrada® radar level transmitters by Jiwei Automations combine advanced 80GHz FMCW technology, robust design, and multiple communication options to meet the growing demands of modern water and wastewater treatment. Their adaptability to challenging environments, compatibility with digital systems, and compliance with recognized safety certifications make them a trusted alternative to international brands.
