Mud Tank Level Measurement Case:Application of JWrada® 80 GHz Radar Level Sensor in Drilling Mud Tanks
Application Background
During drilling operations, mud tanks are used for storing and circulating drilling mud. Agitators or jet nozzles are typically installed inside the tanks to continuously mix the medium and maintain a homogeneous condition.
Due to the complex composition of drilling mud, issues such as high viscosity, sedimentation, and contamination may occur during operation. Therefore, level measurement in mud tanks must be highly reliable and independent of changes in medium properties. In addition, strong agitation inside the tank creates significant surface turbulence, placing higher demands on measurement stability.
Under such complex conditions, traditional contact-based measurement methods often require higher maintenance costs. Therefore, non-contact radar level measurement technology is a more suitable solution.

Non-Contact Radar Level Measurement Technology
Process Data
Measuring task: Continuous level measurement
Measuring point: Vessel (Mud Tank)
Measuring range: Up to 10 m
Medium: Mud (Drilling mud)
Process temperature: 0 … +90 °C
Process pressure: 0 … 5 bar
Special challenges: Heavy contamination, strong agitation, high adhesion
Solution: JWrada® Non-Contact Radar Level Sensor
For this application, the Jiwei JWrada® 80 GHz radar level sensor was selected to ensure long-term stable operation under demanding conditions.
Based on advanced 80 GHz high-frequency radar technology, the device performs non-contact measurement. The sensor is mounted at the top of the tank and does not come into direct contact with the medium.
The system transmits a narrow-beam high-frequency electromagnetic signal downward. When the signal reaches the mud surface, it is reflected back as an echo. The internal signal processing unit analyzes and calculates the distance between the sensor and the medium surface, converting it into real-time level data.
The 80 GHz technology provides a smaller beam angle and stronger signal focusing capability, effectively reducing interference from tank structures and improving measurement stability in complex environments.
In mud tank applications, the medium is highly adhesive and the liquid surface is constantly disturbed by agitators. The JWrada® radar level sensor utilizes optimized echo recognition algorithms and signal filtering mechanisms to suppress false echoes and interference signals, ensuring reliable measurement even under heavy contamination and strong turbulence.
The device also supports flexible parameter configuration, allowing optimization according to on-site conditions, enabling long-term stable and maintenance-free operation.
